Fodder & Salad Burnets (13/06/2020) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank). There are actually both Burnets here - the large longer one is Fodder Burnet, but the smaller globular ones are Salad Burnet. I sowed both as part of my rewilding project. Fodder Burnet is not a native, unlike Salad Burnet. It tends to be sold in wildflower seed mixes that are intended for pasture use.
Fodder Burnet (Poterium sanguisorba ssp. balearicum) (13/06/2020) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank). This is a Fodder Burnet, not only because of the leaves and elongated flower spikes, but also the sheer size - Salad Burnet is a smaller plant with heads more globular.
Fodder Burnet (Poterium sanguisorba ssp. balearicum) (06/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank). It is a bisexual flower - upper part female flowers with red styles (although here they are mostly gone), lower part is the male part with long white stamens bearing creamy-yellow pollen.

Fodder Burnet (Poterium sanguisorba ssp. balearicum) (09/05/2020) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank). It's a much more substantial plant than Salad Burnet as you'd expect from a plant developed as an animal fodder source.
Fodder Burnet (Poterium sanguisorba ssp. balearicum) (13/06/2020) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank). Going to seed.
Fodder Burnet (Poterium sanguisorba ssp. balearicum) (12/05/2020) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank). Unopened flower spike of Fodder Burnet (Salad Burnet has more globular shaped ones).
Fodder Burnet (Poterium sanguisorba ssp. balearicum) (29/06/2020) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank). This is Fodder Burnet as the leaves are longer than wide. Salad Burnet instead has rounder leaves.

Salad Burnet (Poterium sanguisorba) (06/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank). These female flowers are slightly pinker than usual, but they can also be white.
Salad Burnet (Poterium sanguisorba) (03/07/2022) Fulking Hill, Fulking, W Sussex. This - a female flower - is an actual wild version found. It's much smaller than the Salad Burnet specimens i have around here (which are definitely not Fodder Burnet). Salad Burnet is said to like chalky soils - and the South Downs is definitely chalky!
Salad Burnet (Poterium sanguisorba) (03/07/2022) Fulking Hill, Fulking, W Sussex. My index finger for scale. This is a particuarly small specimen.
Salad Burnet (Poterium sanguisorba) (03/07/2022) Fulking Hill, Fulking, W Sussex. This one on the South Downs (as per earlier images of flowers) seems to have leaves that are a bit succulent unlike the leafier specimens we have at home.
Salad Burnet (Poterium sanguisorba) (01/05/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank). Young leaves form a stairway to heaven type appearance.
Salad Burnet (Poterium sanguisorba) (13/06/2020) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank). A great shot of Salad Burnet leaves - they are wider / rounder than those of Fodder Burnet (whose leaves are longer than wide). Also Salad Burnet leaf teeth are rounder than the more sharply pointed ones of Fodder Burnet.
