Fat Hen / White Goosefoot (Chenopodium album) (20/08/2023) West Mill Lane, Small Dole, Henfield, W Sussex (footpath leading to poo-bridge in field of Maize). Why the plant often looks mealy - these little pale crystal-like bobbles. The flowers are really tiny - the little green things complete with anthers and the ovary in the middle.

Fat Hen / White Goosefoot (Chenopodium album) (16/09/2023) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). I think the flowers are strangely beautiful - I really like green flowers, quite unusual and often tiny like these. So you have to inspect a specimen closely to see them!
Fat Hen / White Goosefoot (Chenopodium album) (16/09/2023) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). They are extremely crystalline. In fact they are little waxy particules and they help the plant repel water.

Fat Hen / White Goosefoot (Chenopodium album) (13/06/2020) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank). Unopened flower buds and classic Fat Hen leaves. But the leaves vary massively as does the stature of the plant, so lots of further images to assist in ID.
Fat Hen / White Goosefoot (Chenopodium album) (13/06/2020) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank). Unopened flower buds.
Fat Hen / White Goosefoot (Chenopodium album) (13/06/2020) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank). An example of the massively variable leaves and giss of Fat Hen, these are lanceolate but the more usual would be diamond-shaped leaves. Also this spsecimen is a bit more sprawly but others are pretty upright.
Fat Hen / White Goosefoot (Chenopodium album) (13/06/2020) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank). A more typical giss and leaf shape.

Fat Hen / White Goosefoot (Chenopodium album) (08/07/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank). Lots of unopened buds, with the odd opened flower. You'd completely overlook these unless you look closely as they are pretty tiny. Flower spikes can be quite long like this or quite short.
Fat Hen / White Goosefoot (Chenopodium album) (08/07/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank). Another "giss", this one more leafy than flowers.
Fat Hen / White Goosefoot (Chenopodium album) (20/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). Some very young plants. We get masses of them here - they really like the surface of the car park!
Fat Hen / White Goosefoot (Chenopodium album) (20/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). Yet another variation on leaf shape, this is a pretty young plant.
Fat Hen / White Goosefoot (Chenopodium album) (17/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). A particularly "mealy": specimen complete with rain drops!
Fat Hen / White Goosefoot (Chenopodium album) (17/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). Close-up of the previous plant showing how mealy it is. Fat Hen plants do vary a lot in the extent of their mealiness though.

Fat Hen / White Goosefoot (Chenopodium album) (20/08/2023) West Mill Lane, Small Dole, Henfield, W Sussex (footpath leading to poo-bridge in field of Maize). A ground-hugging but sprawly specimen.
Fat Hen / White Goosefoot (Chenopodium album) (20/08/2023) West Mill Lane, Small Dole, Henfield, W Sussex (footpath leading to poo-bridge in field of Maize). Lots of little flowers on this one.
From Top: Young Red Goosefoot, Fat Hen, two older Red Goosefoot (08/07/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). Top is baby Red Goosefoot, next is Fat Hen, and the bottom two are older Red Goosefoots. Note how Fat Hen leaf tapers into the stalk but Red Gooswefoot are wider down the stalk (a good differentiator).
From Top: Young Red Goosefoot, Fat Hen, two older Red Goosefoot (08/07/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). The same image as previous but the undersides. Note how the Fat Hen one (second down) is mealy, but the Goosefoot leaves are not.
Fat Hen / White Goosefoot (Chenopodium album) (08/07/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). You can see the light reflecting off the little crystal bobbles on the leaf.
Fat Hen / White Goosefoot (Chenopodium album) (08/07/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). The underside of the previous leaf. The undersides are often very much more mealy than the uppersides.
Fat Hen / White Goosefoot (Chenopodium album) (08/07/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (arena bank). The leaf top left looks a bit like Fig-Leaved Goosefoot (which is also mealy), but that species has two quite clearly defined basal lobes.
Fat Hen / White Goosefoot (Chenopodium album) (20/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). Leaf shape can vary dramatically from lanceolate, to oval through to diamond shaped, often with teeth. Also showing that some specimens, like this, are less mealy than others.
Fat Hen / White Goosefoot (Chenopodium album) (20/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). A more usual leaf shape, toothed diamond shape. Fat Hen leaves always taper abruptly into the stalk (unlike Red Goosefoot, although Fig-Leaved Goosefoot also tapers abruptly, but that has, well, fig-shaped leaves!).
Fat Hen / White Goosefoot (Chenopodium album) (26/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). This one is really mealy - Fat Hen can vary quite a lot in how mealy a particular specimen is.
