Annual Pearlwort (Sagina apetala) (11/06/2021) Southbank Barn, Henfield (betwen paving slabs on car park by house). Annual not Procumbent because the latter has stems that root at the nodes but as you can see here that is not the case and the stems are more upright.
Annual Pearlwort (Sagina apetala) (11/06/2021) Southbank Barn, Henfield (betwen paving slabs on car park by house). Both Procumbent and Slender Pearlworts have sepals that spread crosswise around the fruit, but Annual has sepals that are held more or less erect, as here. These sepals are also more or less pointed, Procumbent and Slender have more rounded sepals (and the latter has red-tinged ones).
Procumbent Pearlwort (Sagina procumbens) (11/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). So lucky to find this - an actual flower - it is mostly sepals, but you can just see some tiny white petals. Part of the reason I was so lucky to find this is that they are probably one of the tiniest flowers in the uk (hence makro shot). It is quite rare, apparently, to see petals.
Procumbent Pearlwort (Sagina procumbens) (20/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park).
Procumbent Pearlwort (Sagina procumbens) (07/05/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). A young plant, this will start rooting and spreading from the nodes. My little finger shows just how tiny this plant is. If you want to find it, have a close look at rough ground, e.g. car parks and similar.
Procumbent Pearlwort (Sagina procumbens) (25/05/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). Plant now developing buds, some just opening.
Procumbent Pearlwort (Sagina procumbens) (25/05/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park).
Procumbent Pearlwort (Sagina procumbens) (25/05/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). Note the rounded sepals - they are more pointed in Annual Pearlwort and red-tinged in Slender Pearlwort.
Procumbent Pearlwort (Sagina procumbens) (06/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). Amongst a load of Sand Spurrey - the latter itself is small, so this shows - especially with my little finger - just how small Pearlwort is. So if you want to see it, look very closely in waste ground, car parks and similar areas.
Procumbent Pearlwort (Sagina procumbens) (25/05/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). This is a large mass of it which wold make it easier to find, but the flowers are truly tiny. Most people weedkill their car parks - I have to on some of it, but leave some wild so these species have a home.
Procumbent Pearlwort (Sagina procumbens) (01/05/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). Not the other pearlworts because they have longer stems and are more upright whereas this is more prostrate and has rooting nodes. It's a young plant.
Procumbent Pearlwort (Sagina procumbens) (07/05/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). The basal leaves have little tiny spikes along the edges. It is qiuite a succulent plant.
Procumbent Pearlwort (Sagina procumbens) (07/05/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). The upper leaves have a minute point at the end.
Procumbent Pearlwort (Sagina procumbens) (15/03/2022) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). Baby Procument Pearlworts growing amidst the moss.
Procumbent Pearlwort (Sagina procumbens) (06/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). A developing seed capsule - eventually the sepals will spread outwards and the capsule will become papery looking.
Procumbent Pearlwort (Sagina procumbens) (10/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). Capsules ripening.
Procumbent Pearlwort (Sagina procumbens) (06/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). A ripe seed capsule anad others developing around it.
Procumbent Pearlwort (Sagina procumbens) (06/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). Annual Pearlwort has the sepals pointing upwards and Slender Pearlwort has pinkish sepals with reddish edges.
Procumbent Pearlwort (Sagina procumbens) (06/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). The seed capsule showing the little tiny seeds inside.
Procumbent Pearlwort (Sagina procumbens) (10/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). Thank god for makro photography as this is so small, even then you can see I am having problems with focus!
Procumbent Pearlwort (Sagina procumbens) (06/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). A makro shot of the seeds inside the capsule.
Slender Pearlwort (Sagina apetala ssp. filicaulis) (10/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). Slender Pearlwort is a spindly plant with releatively long flower stalks. Procumbent, as the name suggests, instead is more succulent and low growing.
Slender Pearlwort (Sagina apetala ssp. filicaulis) (10/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). This is my little finger again showing how tiny Pearlworts are.
Slender Pearlwort (Sagina apetala ssp. filicaulis) (10/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). Slender because of these pink-tinged sepals which are blunt/hooded. Procumebent instead has seed capsules with greenish sepals with a white fringe. The most similar is Annual Pearlwort, but that has sepals held more or less erect around the seed capsule.
Slender Pearlwort (Sagina apetala ssp. filicaulis) (20/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). This is Slender not Annual because the latter has sepals held more or less erect around the capsule. Also the sepals of Slender have a pinkish tinge and reddish edges as here
Slender Pearlwort (Sagina apetala ssp. filicaulis) (20/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). The reddish edges to the sepals is more clear here.
Slender Pearlwort (Sagina apetala ssp. filicaulis) (10/06/2021) Southbank Equestrian, Henfield (car park). Seeds now ready for dispersal.
