Goldfinch ♂ (Carduelis carduelis) (22/03/2006) Driftway, Upper Beeding, Steyning (garden). Females do have red and look pretty much similar, but they have less extent of red beyond the eye to the back of the head.
Leucistic Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) (18/07/2005) Driftway, Upper Beeding, Steyning (garden). Was very chuffed to see this - a rare leucistic (near albino but not quite) specimen. The only clue as to the species are the wing colours and patterns. Annoying that the image is blurred.
Goldfinch Juvenile (Carduelis carduelis) (22/07/2005) Driftway, Upper Beeding, Steyning (garden). A juvemile with its mottled chest and fluffy bum!
Goldfinch Juvenile (Carduelis carduelis) (27/07/2008) Driftway, Upper Beeding, Steyning (garden). Juvenile developing the distinctive barring and yellow stripe on its wings. The buff-coloured markings on the wings will eventually re-feather to white.
Goldfinch Juvenile (Carduelis carduelis) (27/07/2008) Driftway, Upper Beeding, Steyning (garden). We have lots every year hanging out on the feeders!
Goldfinch Juvenile (Carduelis carduelis) (27/07/2008) Driftway, Upper Beeding, Steyning (garden). Juvenile learning how to use the bird feeder!
