South Downs up from Storrington (Chantry Hill). A male showing the darker head - in the breding season this will go pretty much black. They have a very white rump which you can see in flight, which is quite distinctive. From a distance you might think it a Chaffinch, so you need to check closely!

South Downs up from Storrington (Chantry Hill). A pretty little bird it likes woodland and can form sizeable flocks that tend to hang out with Chaffinches. Not so gregarious during the breeding season though!

South Downs up from Storrington (Chantry Hill). We went on a twitch up there as heard on the grapevine there were some bramblings and sure enough we found them. Not sure what they were up to but there was quite a flock of them. They will often hang out with other finches e.g. chaffinch. So if you see a flock of finches take a close look - you might be lucky to spot one or more of these. Both females - males are (even in January) brighter coloured and have darker heads.
