Brambling ♂ (Fringilla montifringilla) (24/01/2009) South Downs up from Storrington (Chantry Hill). A male showing the darker head - in the breding season this will go pretty much black. They have a very white rump which you can see in flight, which is quite distinctive. From a distance you might think it a Chaffinch, so you need to check closely!
Brambling ♂ (Fringilla montifringilla) (24/01/2009) South Downs up from Storrington (Chantry Hill). A pretty little bird it likes woodland and can form sizeable flocks that tend to hang out with Chaffinches. Not so gregarious during the breeding season though!

Bramblings ♀︎ (Fringilla montifringilla) (24/01/2009) South Downs up from Storrington (Chantry Hill). We went on a twitch up there as heard on the grapevine there were some bramblings and sure enough we found them. Not sure what they were up to but there was quite a flock of them. They will often hang out with other finches e.g. chaffinch. So if you see a flock of finches take a close look - you might be lucky to spot one or more of these. Both females - males are (even in January) brighter coloured and have darker heads.
