Barn Owl (Tyto alba) - Family "Tytonidae" (26/05/2007) Sussex Wildlife Centre. A bit of a cheat, but included here as later images we actually get them in the set aside field beyond the garden. They are actually not Strigidae but Tytonidae, the only member of that family. It's the heart-shaped facial disc, lack of ear tufts, longer legs that separate them from the "true owls" family (Strigidae), members of the latter having rounded faces.

Barn Owl (Tyto alba) - Family "Tytonidae" (07/10/2007) Driftway, Upper Beeding, Steyning (set aside field beyond garden). We actually get one or more - I've seen two at once - in that field regularly. It's why set-aside fields are so important as all the little mammals like voles, shrews and mice are undisturbe by agriculture, so a bit of a bonanza for the owls. This is at dusk.
